Spaces Between Us

Spaces Between Us
by Starr Jiang

You asked me once how far the distance stretched
Between you and me. I could not answer.
Sometimes we’re the image two lovers etched;
We’re catching our breaths as hazy cancer
Almost leaves the soft Manhattan skyline.
Then the scaffolding drowns in Hudson’s streams,
Revealing two souls lost amid the brine -
In castles that honed American Dreams.
So I can only answer in this way:
The road where you end is where I begin.
If the clock could switch the sun’s dying ray
If time progressed and regressed once again
Perhaps we could save each other anew.
In the end I’d have dared to walk away
Even if we were true.
